Create Glitter Lettering in Affinity Designer

Affinity Designer has fast become a popular option for vectorising lettering on the iPad. But did you know it also has a pixel workspace as well? This means you can swap between vector and pixel tools without leaving the app. Very cool. (Psst, if you don’t own AD, keep reading for info on how to get a 50% discount).

Today we’re looking at a pixel based project for how to create Glitter Lettering in Affinity Designer using layer masks.

Learn Calligraphy
on the iPad
from Scratch!

Create stunning calligraphy in Procreate with no experience or special tech skills (even if you have messy handwriting and don’t think you’re creative enough)

This project is great for beginners and will cover several key ‘getting-to-know-the-app’ tasks such as:

  • Creating layer masks (remember ‘white reveals, black conceals‘!)
  • Selecting and deselecting
  • Importing a texture image
  • Changing brush sets and brushes

I’ll be demoing textures & brushes from my Glitter & Foil Kit for Affinity (and you can download a free sample below), but the same key actions apply to whichever textures you wish to use!

Affinity Designer is currently 50% off (until June 20)

Before we jump into the tutorial, if you are on the iPad Calligraphy email list, you would have received an email from me last week about a 50% discount on Affinity Software (for both desktop and iPad). The offer was scheduled to expire on the 20th May but they’ve just extended it to 20th June! If you missed out, you still have time to grab it at the discounted price

Ok, ready for the tutorial? You can download a free sample texture below if you want to follow along. Let’s make some glitter lettering!

There’s no denying, Affinity is definitely a different experience to Procreate! There are a few actions you will find are the same, such as the two finger tap to undo, but overall the experience is quite different and takes a bit of getting used to. But just like anything, that comes with time (and having good tutorials to guide you of course ???? ).
