Common Troubleshooting
Getting Black Ink: Make sure to choose a true black color from the color panel if your strokes appear faded or grey.
Choosing the Correct Brush Set: Double-check that you’re using the special calligraphy brush set you downloaded with the Starter Kit—not one of Procreate’s default brushes. (Confirm the exact name of the brush set in your download instructions.)
Apple Pencil Double Tap Issue: If your tool suddenly changes (e.g. you’re erasing instead of drawing), you may have accidentally double-tapped your Apple Pencil. You can change or disable this setting in your iPad’s Apple Pencil settings.
Palm Making Marks: If your hand is making marks on the screen, go into Procreate > Actions > Prefs > Gesture Controls, and set it to “Only Draw with Apple Pencil.” This will prevent unintentional marks from your palm.
Layer Visibility Must Be On: You must have both your writing layer and the guideline layer visible—check the little checkbox next to the layer in the Layers Panel. If you see a “Layer Hidden” warning, tap Cancel, then make sure the visibility is turned on (the checkbox is ticked).
Writing on the Correct Layer: Make sure you’re writing on a blank layer marked with a ✍️ and named something like “– write here.” The active (blue highlighted) layer should be this one.
Undo Not Working: If the two-finger tap isn’t undoing your last move, try the Undo and Redo buttons—they’re on the left-hand side of the screen near the bottom.
Baseline Clarification (Basic Stroke 1): For Basic Stroke 1, your strokes should stop at the baseline—not go all the way down to the bottom guideline. It’s a common mistake, so just take note when you’re tracing.Accidentally Opening Brush Studio: If you tap the brush name twice, you’ll open Brush Studio (the brush settings editor). Don’t worry—just tap Done to return to the canvas. You don’t need to change any brush settings right now.
